Make Your Own Organic Pesticide

All Natural Rhubarb Insecticide

Rhubarb leaves are poisonous to humans if ingested because they contain a high level of oxalic acid.* It is relatively simple to turn this natural poison into an effective natural insecticide. Rhubarb insecticide is very effective against leaf eating insects (like aphids, spider mite and caterpillars) while safe for beneficial bees is relatively simple.

Ingredients:

• 1 cup of chopped rhubarb leaves
• 6 1/2 cups of water
• 1/4 cup of Murphy's oil soap (available at Heeman's)
• A large pot
• 1 spray or trigger bottle. (Insure it is properly labeled as poisonous)

Instructions:

1. Put the leaves in the pot and cover with the water, bring to the boil and boil for 20-30 minutes.
2. Remove from the heat and let cool.
3. Once cooled, strain the liquid and add the soap flakes/detergent.
4. Mix well and pour into your spray/trigger bottle. It is now ready to use.

It's that simple! The soap is important if you intend to control aphids or spider mite with this pesticide. Murphy's can be substituted for other soaps (not laundry detergent) but an oil soap gives best control as it doesn't wash off with rain or watering.

*Due to oxalic acid's poisonous properties Heeman's strongly advises any using this pesticide on edible plants to wash produce thoroughly before eating.
