Horticultural Psychologist

At Heeman’s, we believe growth isn’t just something we do, it’s who we are! From the plants we nurture to the people we welcome, everything in our space is constantly evolving, adapting, and thriving. But as we continue to push the boundaries of plant care and guest experience, we’ve recognized something important:

Our plants give a lot.

They listen without interrupting. They brighten moods without asking for anything in return. They hold space. They feel. And as empathetic organisms working daily to support the emotional well-being of our guests, it’s only fair that we support them too.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce this brand new role at Heeman’s!

Job Summary:

At Heeman’s, each staff member is titled a “Daymaker” first and foremost. Our amazing staff is the key to making our space a “Happy Place” for everyone who enters and every plant under our roof.

As our Horticultural Psychologist, you will be responsible for supporting the emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being of our greenhouse plants. You’ll work closely with a diverse population of annuals, perennials, houseplants, and the occasional, overwhelmed fern to ensure they feel seen, supported, and emotionally balanced throughout the busy spring season.

This role plays a key part in maintaining the positive energy our greenhouse is known for, because happy plants make happy people!

Employment Type:

  • Full-time for year round

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct one-on-one and group therapy sessions with plants experiencing stress, transplant shock, or identity crises

  • Assess emotional climates across greenhouse zones and recommend vibe adjustments as needed

  • Develop personalized affirmation programs for high-needs varieties (looking at you, Calatheas)

  • Mediate conflicts between neighbouring plants competing for light, space, or attention

  • Provide ongoing support during peak stress periods (i.e sudden temperature swings, dry spells, etc.)

  • Collaborate with the watering team to ensure hydration plans align with emotional needs

  • Monitor for signs of burnout, including drooping, yellowing, or general existential fatigue

Knowledge, Skills, & Personal Attributes

  • Strong interpersonal skills (plant-to-human and plant-to-plant communication considered an asset)

  • Ability to read subtle emotional cues, including leaf curl, colour shifts, and passive-aggressive wilting

  • Calm, grounded presence with a reassuring aura

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth emotional environment

  • Strong belief in the power of positive reinforcement and kind words

  • Experience setting healthy boundaries with succulents who “don’t need much”

  • A good sense of humour (you’ll need it)

Education, Experience & Language

  • Gardening experience or willingness to learn
  • Degree or diploma in Horticulture, Psychology, Plant Empathy, or a related field

  • Equivalent experience may include talking to your houseplants and believing they talk back

  • Previous experience in greenhouse environments, counselling settings, or plant whispering preferred

Availability Requirements:

  • Availability to work before and after regular hours and during all hours of operation (which will include evenings and weekends)
  • Flexibility to accommodate scheduling changes
  • Transportation plan; Heeman’s is not located on a bus route

How to apply:
Application deadline is 11:59 pm April 1st, 2026. Please bring a copy of your resume and cover letter to the greenhouse anytime during our regular business hours. You can present your application to our manager on duty at the Guest Services Desk right next to the check-out area. We will ask you a few simple questions when you come in.

We thank you for your interest in obtaining employment with our family business! Candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
